A New Chapter: From Sjögren’s Syndrome to Sjögren’s Disease

We would like to inform our members and partners about an important update that has just been officially announced: The international consensus to change the name Sjögren’s syndrome to Sjögren’s disease has now been formally published in Nature Reviews Rheumatology (read the article here).

This change represents a major step forward in how the condition is recognized and understood globally. Replacing the term “syndrome” with “disease” reflects the seriousness and complexity of Sjögren’s, and responds to long-standing calls from the patient community for better terminology that validates their experience. From syndrome to disease is a long-awaited correction that reflects the seriousness of Sjögren’s and acknowledges the lived experience of millions.

Sjögren Europe is sharing this update following the recommendation and request of the Sjögren’s Foundation. We invite our members and network to read more about this development and to support the gradual transition to the new terminology.
